years ago, I used a micro section device. (you may find it at display
section of MRS conference).  If I remember correctly, it was invented by IBM
and marketed by a third party (sorry, can't remember the name).  The device
has three micrometers mount on a stand.  The position pin can be adjusted to
a level which the material required to be removed (plane of interests).
Three "stop posts" prevent the sample to be over grinded/polished.  I used
the device once or twice. You can section the sample to particular line on
fan-out pattern of to an IC circuit ( > few micron).  X-ray photo with
"clear moulding compond" are helpful to position the area of interest.  The
microsection job was not easy, but the device made it a little bit tolerable.
