the origin of the meter and the liter?

The meter "was intended to be, and is very nearly, the ten-millionth part of
the distance from the equator to the North pole, as ascertained by actual
measurement of an arc of a meridian."

The liter is derived from the cubic centimeter or (AKA milliliter) which when
water is used to fill the volume weighs one gram.

This is the beauty of the metric system... it all ties together and makes
sense.

Engineers are like lawyers now days having the skill to convert between
arcane units of measure. With one measurement system the job is much easier and
less mistakes will be made.

The Metric system is the future of measurement in a coherent world. The
sooner we in the US change the better off we will be.

One last bit of metric trivia : In Russia, small change can be determined by
weighing it. One kopec weighed 1 gram, 2 kopec-2 grams, 3 kopec-3 grams, 5
kopec-5 grams.

Coins above this value were counted.

Cheers,
Joe
