Pat,
   We do a product with similar clearance problems. We load diodes through
PCB with base of diode flush with solder side (use non-plated thru hole).
This requires special lead bends, manual stuffing and soldering leads on
component side, but buys .065 extra clearance. It is labor intensive but
works. We do not attempt adhesive or wave as labor and rework (failure
repairs) cost more than the simple manual operation.
