What were the conditions?  How violent is the reaction?  Explosive or just
corrosive?  Finely divided metals tend to be much more reactive than sheet
metal.  If there were a bit of humidity, especially at an elevated
temperature, might there not be a bit of HCl liberating hydrolysis taking
place?
