Please re-read my posting. I'm certainly not advocating the practice, for
the reasons you state, but I've known of it to be done, and it may have been
a cause of the problem in this case.

With all due respect, the practice is unacceptable. You're done when out of
the press. There is no going back as the stresses, or not, are already
induced...
