Phil and John,

I appreciate your replies to my question.  I agree this is not an acceptable
condition for any number of reasons.  I wonder if it might relate to the
relatively new push for all tin terminations to support lead-free.  The
condition of the terminations on these caps looks much more susceptible to
creating loose metal debris than caps with fused tin-lead finish.

hi,

in my not so humble opinion, these parts should be scrapped.  looks like a
disaster waiting to happen.  you should ask the manufacturer of these parts
what caused this condition and ask them why they didn't reject them.

Fellow Technetters,

I recently found extraneous metal on the surface of several MLCCs on an
assembly.  I examined stock parts and found this condition pre-existed on
the stock caps (tape & reel).  These caps have pure tin terminations.  There
is a picture of this condition at the link below ...

What is your opinion of the acceptability of this condition?

What might be the root cause?

Are there any specifications that address this issue?
