We'd also toyed with the idea of barcoding, but it seems to only
be a viable option of assembled boards, unless you design the
code in your artwork for bare boards. And by the time I leave an
area open for the barcode I usually can put the information in
copper, or if I want the barcode over the traces I can accomidate
it in my silkscreen. In either case, the barcode became an extra
part to put on and could conceivably come off under extreme
environmental conditions.

I've been trying to get info in the past several years on this very
subject.
The only conclusion to date is that mil-std-130 states you must
specify the
method of marking, that is must be legible, and it must be
permanent. It
does not state you must use any specific method as long as the
method chosen
does not effect the performance/integrity of the part. We are
starting to
use kevlar and polyester labels from Brady and have run tests for
performance with cleaners, coatings .....
