I agree!
BUT in my day job we have all LPI masked boards SMOBC, HASL and tent vias. We
are high volume, low cost consumer stuff and have seen no reliability issues
to date. We tent both sides of 25 mil vias and see both reflow improvement
(vias closer to lands) and acceptable wave (we try to keep vias out from
under ICs). I cannot disagree with all the Doubting Thomas types but it do
seem to work for us. I would recommend a low volume build to test your
processes before switching over with any of your designs (just in case your
application does not fit). There really are lots of variables, so check
closely to make sure you don't get burned!!!
