You can do an ionic test. Chrysler and GM, I know for sure have their
own specs for ionics in regards to under hood boxes where the control
circuits are housed.
In regards to "invisible crud" perhaps a Millipore test (Gravimetric
particle) could at least confirm the effectiveness of the solvent in
removing chips and other metal fines.

Subject: [TN] Cleaning fluid and ionic contamination

Good morning Technetters,

We now have a Safety-Kleen system which is being used for cleaning some
parts that ultimately go into dielectric oil in a high voltage system.
The solvent used is "Safety-Kleen Premium Solvent" which is basically
Naphtha. The system filters and re-distills the solvent to keep it
"clean".

My question is, once a part has been washed and dried, just how clean is
it? It may be grease free, but how much invisible crud may be lurking
on the part that once installed into a high voltage system can cause
high voltage breakdown either short term or long term?

How can we profile the relative cleanliness of the parts?

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Phil Nutting
