Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer (sorry for the posting
delay, was at a dragonboat festival this weekend):
The Question:
This element has no biological role and is never encountered outside
nuclear facilities. The total world production of this element to date is
estimated to less than a millionth of a gram. A piece of this element has
never been seen by the naked eye as its intense radioactivity would
immediately result in its complete evaporation. The total amount of this
element found in the Earth's crust is estimated to be less than 30 grams.
What element is being described?
The Answer:
The element is Astatine (At). Astatine is easy to produce by bombarding
bismuth with high energy alpha particles but because it is so volatile and
highly radioactive very little is known about it. Much of the data on
Astatine is from the study of extremely dilute solutions or from its
position in the Periodic Table. Astatine was discovered by D. Corson, K.
Mackenzie and E. Segre in 1940 but due to the resource demands of the
Manhattan Project, very little research was conducted on it. Astatine was
finally named in 1947. In 1931, a group of chemists lead by F. Allison
reported they had discovered the element below Iodine which they named
Alabamine (after the state of Alabama in the US) but their claim could not
be confirmed.
The quiz winner is Nigel Burtt who will get the services of Clumpy and
Kloumpios. The guys will fire up their John Deere tractors and make their
way from Brian's house in Cyprus to Nigel's facility in the UK.
