Hi Rob,

I am assuming that you are talking about attaching insulated, stranded
wires to a thru hole on a board.

1. Stranded wires are best pretinned.
2. They should be treated much like a solid wire or a component lead. i.e.
They should be visible on the secondary side, should not extend so far as
to be a threat for shorts, and should have a sufficient solder fillet on
top and bottom.
3. There should be sufficient insultion clearance.
4. You should still be cautious about solder wicking up under the
insulation into an area that needs to flex.

Hope this helps.

Charlie B.

Subject: [TN] Wires being used on PCB Assemblies

My name is Rob Carver at Harrington Signal Inc. in Moline Illinois.
Our Quality Assurance Supervisor recently quit and the inspectors have a
question that I as a ISO manager cannot answer, so I'll post a message.
The question is must wires that are soldered directly to PCB assemblies
be:
a. Pre-tinned??
b. Have both top and bottom side solder and the correct percentage
of fill.
The IPC book doesn't really address this point.
