I would agree with Graham Collin's posting.  You will get atomization
anytime you spray coat.  The trick is to minimize the overspray.  There are
plenty of High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) guns out there.  The woodworking
industry has been using them for years.  A new development has been Low
Volume Low Pressure (LVLP) guns which improve transfer efficiency and
minimize overspray.
