Hello there, IPC/IPC Members!

I work for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, RI. My job
function involves the manufacture and acquisition of MK 48 ADCAP Torpedoes.

We're having failure problems with PWB's whose master dwgs specify core
material and prepreg material per MIL-P-13949, slash sheets 4 and 12.
Specifically, the dwgs require core material of GFN and prepreg material of
PGFN. However, the PWB supplier made the boards of "FR4" material.

So, with that background, would somebody out there in the IPC world please
answer a couple of questions for us:

1. What is FR4, and what is the parent spec that addresses or controls it?

2. Are there any commercial (IPC or somebody else's) and/or military
performance specs that directly correlate with or directly substitute for
MIL-P-13949 slash sheets 4 and 12?

Any help or guidance you can give us would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

Tony Carlone
