This sounds like a technology that I have only heard about, but have not
experienced.

We are using some rigid-flex boards presently. One prospective supplier
contacted me, offering a system of independent rigid boards with
removable/replaceable flex portions. We never got past the talking stage. I
never got to see one of the actual critters he was talking about, so I don't
know what their solution to the handling problems would be.

What you describe, sounds like their system. You might want to give him a call:

 Subject: [TN] Soldering .5 mm flat flex to PCB








Hi Techies,

I have an application that will require me to attach a .5 mm pitch, 41
position flat flex cable to a rigid PCB.  Our customer is working with a
flat flex supplier as well for the application and they told them that they
will apply the cable to the board by some type of heat plate or bar that
will process the solder and join the cable and PCB pads together or they
will insert the cable conductors into vias and solder them to the PCB.  I
don't know if anyone can help me on this, but I want to know if any of you
know anything about this type of process?   Is there equipment that I can
purchase to apply a flat flex cable to a PCB?  The cable has such a small
pitch that I'm not sure how I can insert them into vias or through holes
without causing a quality issue.  Any help would be great, if more
information is needed, let me know.
