PCIF Electrical Test Working Group

A working group has been set up by the Printed Circuit Interconnection
Federation (the UK's Printed Circuit Board manufacturing Trade Federation)
to support the work of the PCIF Consequential Loss Working Group,
specifically with regard to the technical and practical aspects of bare
board electrical test.

On the principle of having the argument before rather than after the event,
there needs to be a clear understanding between bare board fabricator and
customer as to what the electrical will comprise, and what it will or will
not determine.

The group's objective is to discuss and comment upon the following items, so
that recommendations can be incorporated into the consequential loss group's
proposed Code of Best Practice.

1. Guidelines for questions related to test which need to be asked of the
customer before accepting an order to manufacture a circuit board, and a
means of checking that the answers are valid.

2. Critical stage for agreement/acceptance/sign off of data.

3. Agreement of test parameters/relevance of test parameters/realistic and
meaningful specification of test parameters.

4. Working/handling procedures/disciplines/accountability.

5. Understanding of different types of test equipment (generally, not
proprietarily) and different test methods. Grid testing/probe testing/split
testing (grid-grid, grid-probe)

6. Identify machine-dependent issues (non-proprietarily, but produce list of
meaningful questions for individual users to ask individual equipment
suppliers).

7. Case studies of specific issues as illustration of actual situations to
avoid.

8. List of actual defects/latent defects which will not be detected by
bare-board test . Differentiate between defects which are delivered and
defects which arise after delivery.

9. Invite comment from equipment suppliers.

Are the IPC involved in anything similar, and does anyone have any comments
or suggestions concerning this. The Federation would appreciate any input
you may have on this.
