I too have seen the gamut of "special rework" requests. We will document the request, snap a few close-up digital pictures (if necessary), record any concerns that we may have and request that the customer sign off before the rework is implemented.

How's quadruple stacking of some 0805 components with a "teepee" of a diode and resistor combination over it? That was just last week's "special rework" request.

We see all sorts of "special rework" that our customers request. Although the design of the rework may not be the most robust or the most "IPC Correct", the bottom line is that the Print takes Precedence. Typically, when I see something like this, I blink my eyes a few times, shake my head, and document the info on a DFM report with my recommendations. The only time something is really a "NO NO" is when the customer says "NO NO".

Subject: [TN] Flipped transistor?

Here is a first for me!

Before I go ruffling some feathers I would like to have others opinion. I've just been informed of a modification on a boards that requires to install a SOT23 NPN transistor to be fliped on its back in order to be soldered. The poor leads are then bent backward to contact with the board's lands of some other component.

Engineering did not raise a flag on that yet... I'm worried to say the least because I'm convinced that this is a NO NO!

Anyone has seen that in the past?

Thanks!

Jean-François
