Yes, we do block files that are truly attached but this was sent as an
html msg with an embedded graphic which some email programs receive
indicating there was an attachment. 
 
This has triggered a renewed effort to see if our listserv s/w will
permit posting only of plain text msgs (no html). Downside of that is
that html is the default msg format when Outlook is installed. As the
most commonly used email program this may cause of lot of technet
postings to be rejected because of wrong msg type. 
 
I concur with Joe's comment that this was probably an automated update
feature. However, the onus is on anyone that installs such any kind of
s/w to be aware of and evaluate the consequences of their decision to
permit the automated action. 
 
In the long run, messages of this type are often viewed as SPAM and will
do more harm to the perception of a company's image than a few contact
updates can overcome.

I am pretty certain that it was an inadvertent post. There are programs
that go through users mail lists and request updates from those on this
list. This one was likely just a simple error. 

What is curious is how the attachment/embedded graphic made it through.
I thought there was a filter for that.
