Wayne,
To further Inge's comments ... I've had wire bonders running at more like 20
wires per second [K&S, ASM and others are truly hauling a_ _!], depending on
the length and loop of the wire.
As he indicates, assembly is ALL automatic. Even molding, de-flash, cut,
trim, form, test, etc. can be fully hands-off. Obviously, the tooling costs
a bundle, but ...
I wonder if it was actually re-marked, or was the deflash nozzle
intentionally directed to the surface to [enhance] provide contrast for the
laser marking???
Just a thought.

Wayne, you paid a 'lot' for them. We get them for 0.12 ! (>100 pcs). If
you visit a semi plant, you'll understand. It's a mass production of a kind
that you hardly believe your eyes. Everything in-line. No humans are
involved. E.g. the automatic wirebonder makes >10 bonds per second.

We needed to do a bit of training on some DIP parts, so for some "dummies" I
bought one of the cheapest things I could find at DigiKey. Turned out to be
a 74HC14 part, and they cost 0.29 in 50pc quantity.
<I have copied Steve on the pix so hopefully he can get links up to them>
The first picture shows the surface of the parts. They all look identical.
The tops have been selectively sandblasted, then a laser marking machine was
used to put a new marking on them. Seemed like a good chance the parts were
counterfeit, so I authorized using acid for decapsulation to check out the
die face. The second picture shows that the wafer masks were created by the
manufacturer listed on the re-label, anyway.
Now if I paid 0.29, DigiKey is probably paying about 0.15. How can anybody
go through this and make money?
