In my experience with soldering PCB's, the important factor is not the
soldering iron temperature but how long the operator spends on the PCB to
make a satisfactory solder joint.  IMHO, in order not to damage the laminate
or component, the operator should not spend more than 3 to 5 seconds to make
an acceptable solder joint.  If this is not the case, than there could be
several problems with the soldering operation including, but not excluding,
iron temperature, iron wattage, solder tip design, technique and board design.
