Keep in mind that the primary purpose of ICT is to verify assembly, not 
performance.  So while it is possible to test a chain of nets as a group, 
it is less effective for the purpose of the test.  For example, test points 
on either end of a chain of 6 components electrically connected could 
tell you that one of those components has an open connection, but it 
would not tell you which component is open.  If you were able to add 
test points on each connecting net, the ICT results would pin point 
exactly which component failed.  Sometimes, space constraints require 
this less effective method.

What you are describing is more of a functional test, to be performed 
after it has been determined that the assembly is correct.   Functinal 
testing does not require testing each component, instead testing the 
result of the circuit.
