David,

The IPC-SM-782A is a later version than the current IPC-D-275, and follows
newer design principles than was available at the writing of the IPC-D-275.
Therefore, you should use the IPC-SM-782A as your guide.

As with any written publication, new component releases will outpace the
ability to keep a document updated. There are two ways for you to have the
latest information. The first involves an electronic spread sheet
(IPC-EM-782) that resides on your computer. You are then able to add
components as you need them. The program requires that you input the
component data info and it proceeds to calculate the resulting land pattern.
The second method is to access the electronic calculator on the IPC WEB site
(www.ipc.org). This is essentailly the same spreadsheet calculator. However,
it is tied into a searchable database of components, both approved by EIA and
EIAJ, as well as a user database of components not yet approved.

The WEB calculator has just been added to the WEB by the IPC Designers
Council. Therefore, the user database may not be very large at this time.

Regards,

Gary Ferrari
Executive Director
IPC Designers Council
