We had a similar issue with large gauge wires. We found the sweet setup in Esico-Triton Resistance soldering equipment. http://www.esicotriton.com/resistance/
Do you think 1000 Watts would be enough? We have one and it is amazing. Huge pieces are at soldering temperatures in a matter of seconds! Yes seconds... about 2 or 3 seconds. You can make parts cherry red faster with this than with a torch and the heat is much better controlled with regard to placement of heat. A torch heats up a huge area and this gadget heats up a small spot via contact of graphite tips. This is where I would insert the Tim Allen grunt of very cool approval.
For years we had use a much smaller version that wasn't up to the big lug task, but they worked great for small items.
You will not regret buying one of these if you have to solder 0 AWG wire in big copper lugs on a regular basis. Your process time will be reduced by using this machine.

Like Jerry I've never done it but I remember seeing someone solder very
large wire into a very large terminal with a small torch. I don't recall
anything more than that but I might lead you in a direction (kicking and
screaming :-)

I've never done this myself but watched it being done at a customers
site. The had to make a holder for the connector that had a temperature
controlled heater in it. I believe they used a 50 watt iron.

I've been dragged (kicking and screaming) out of my comfort zone, and am
looking at a wire harness. I've got some 0 awg wire to solder into a
connector. We haven't tried it, but I really doubt that my Metcal
MX-500 system is up to this task. Do any of you have experience with
this, and if so can you recommend equipment or technique?
