Hi Genny
You are right in one way, I have heard the same kind of comments plenty
of times....but they are generally comments made without much back-up
from real data.

Every metal, and the risk from every use of it, will be evaulated under
the EU's new draft chemicals policy that will come in to effect around
2007.

Kay

Subject: Re: [LF] The use of Bismuth

OK, I never said there was proposed or actual legislation, but it seemed
like I kept hearing in leadfree info sessions (not in the actual
hardcopy
presentations, but in the word of mouth discussion) that the RoHS is
just a
starting point, that once these current 6 bans were in place, they would
start targeting other materials. And for some reason Bismuth sticks in
my
head as the most commonly mentioned next element on the hit list. By
the
way, I also heard Silver mentioned once, too...
Is there no one else out there that heard these same things? Is my
hearing
that bad? Now I really feel like I'm spreading rumours and hearsay. It
also seems like, from what people are saying here, that Bi is not at all
toxic so there should not even BE a reason for banning it. Unless it
was
the refining process that was toxic?
The other issue against Bi inclusion that I have heard argued is that
people
want to keep the metal compositions as simple as possible. 3 elements
at
most is best. Adding Bi just adds another metal into the mix, when you
already have Sn, Ag and Cu, the most common Pb free solder composition.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
There is NO actual or proposed EU legislation to ban the use of bismuth.
Period. Yes, Bi is a byproduct of lead mining but more and more of it
now
is coming as a byproduct of mining other metals (tungsten). Check out
the
US Geological Survey web page for bismuth.
http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pubs/commodity/bismuth/bismumcs04.pdf

And as Pratap points out, it is not SnBi by itself that is bad, it is
the
SnBiPb alloy that is the problem. Mixing SnBi with SnPb, as shown by
Boeing
is REALLY bad. However, Tom Woodward (Boeing) has also shown that
smaller
amounts of Bi is actually not a problem, at least not to the same
extent. I
do not want to put words in Tom's mouth that everything is hunky dory
about
lesser amounts than in the SnBi eutectic, but things do not look as bad
as
first thought for alloys containing single digit amounts or Bi.

regards,
Bev Christian
