I don't see a lot of activity on this forum... everyone must be very busy... :)

Thought I would take a moment and thank the IPC and the Designers Council membership for an amazing year filled with great discussion, learning, and innovations... What a great organization this has become... Thanks to the individuals who gave of their time and expertise to help make it what it is today...

I just finished this Monday teaching PCB Design to a class of 18 students this semester using Altium Designer and my own developed curriculum... it went very well... We will be teaching the Advanced Class in the Spring. The students were exposed to the use of a High End CAD tool, and how to use it to create a printed circuit project from the beginning to the end. Library development, Schematic creation, Placement, routing, through hole technology, Surface mount technology, Setting up Design Rules, working with Mechanical constraints, High Voltage Power conversion, Audio circuitry, coaxial connectors, power and ground planes, multilayer construction, via types, DFM, DFT, DFA... Fiducials, Fine Pitch parts, Safety agency design constraints like UL and CE... How to use the IPC documentation to guide their board development... and more... It was a full semester of real board design learning... not just familiarity with using a tool.

As I look to the future... I envision the possible application of 3D printing of PCB's in the classroom... The pieces of the technology are there... someone just needs to make it happen... :)The cost of 3D printing has come way down... Makerbot has a fairly nice unit for about 3K. Accurate to about 4 mils... As more materials become available to the home user to experiment with it would be interesting to play with something like it at making my own PCB... I would love to have my classroom set up with a prototyping machine that I could use to print out their boards with... Just a dream right now... but it may actually come true someday... I can dream... can't I?

I'm really enjoying working here with Asymtek in Carlsbad... they have some amazing technology here and make really terrific products... I'm proud to have contributed to the success of their New Product Development group. I'm looking towards the future and more exciting engineering ahead... :)

Thanks for a great year, and here's to a great 2014 for you all... cheers!
