It's amazing the spread. I too used to run the pot in the 500 plus or minus five. Last year at HP was the first time I saw everything run at 470 for everything and it worked for everything including some tough, hi thermal mass boards and the chip cracking problems, with the pot temp that low and good preheating, was non existent with "great" solder joints. Gone are the days of the old MIL-STD-2000 dictating the 500 temp.
