In the early days of SMT, before most packages were available in PLCC or QFP form, people would take DIPs and adapt them for SMT. The most common way was to run them through a lead former, such as Heller (now built by GSD, I believe) or a HEPCO, and trim the leads. The result was a connection we call "I-lead" or "Butt-joint" (not to be confused with the "Beavis-joint". While the butt-joint is not as reliable as a gull-wing or j-lead interconnect, due to smaller surface mating area and much small heel and tow, it suffices in many applications. The trimming equipment is very inexpensive and you will likely find it in companies that still deal with through-hole components.
