Jim, We have implemented an internal numbering system, and you might say at first that it is just as difficult as manufacturer part number, but when bringing new engineers in they came up to speed rather quickly to be able to pick part numbers out for a design. We call them SCD "Source Control Drawings" where all manufacturers of a particular part that meet form fit & function would be listed with there respective Manuf part numbers. The system goes like this XX-XX-XXXXX Where the first XX define what the part is 00, 01 ,02 , 03 etc in our case 37 is fixed resisitors and 38 is variable. The second 2 XX are the type of part like 0805 1206, 1/2w 1/4w ceramic cap etc. The last 5 X's are value so like yours a 10205 would be a 1K 5% resistor. 37-76-10205 in our system would be an 0805 1K 5% 1/10W resistor. That way you quickly memorize the first 4 digits and the last 5 are common sense for part number For IC's say the last 5 digits for say an HCT244 are 00244 where the middle 2 x's define HC HCT LVX etc 12 is our IC first 2 digits so 12-72-00244 is a 74HCT244 We decided to use XX-7X-XXXXX where the "7" in that location defined the part being SMT so you can easily distinguish SMT to PTH parts. Basically it uses 2 fields that I think are easily rememberable and the rest is really a part of the MFG number that actually defines part easily. Don't know if this is what your looking for? Hope it helps or sparks other ideas.
