It will depend also on your pad style.  We run this way.

In other word perpindicular to the wave.  We are running at close to a zero defect level using a 64X100 mil
pad with traces between and using a no wash system.  As geomtries get tighter give up thru hole.  THis is
coming from someone who has 12 year experience in thruough hole and has given up the ghost.  With SMT run
in opposite and use robber pads or cram your decoupling cap on the as* end of you ic to rob the solder.
