For example I have seen inputs on the top and left, and outputs on the bottom and right. I have also seen schematic symbols drawn so that they look like the Physical geometry. Personally I think that makes everybodys job easier, because the schematic looks like the layout and is easier to follow. Some things I like to do when drawing a schematic, is to number the references by page. For example Ref's in the 100 range (U100-U199, R100-R199) belong on page 1, 200 on page two etc. This makes it a lot easier to find a symbol or reference on the pages. It is nice if you can use a B-Sheet size (11X17) to create your schematics on, but C-Sheet size is doable on a laser printer. There are also rules about no staircasing of the leads.
