        This depends on the exact system structure.  Some CAD
        packages have symbols stored natively in ASCII format
        and this may be stable or at least modifiable between
        two revisions of software.

        Others the symbols may be binary in nature with keying
        to a particular version, so yes they can be an obstacle
        when crossing from one installation to another at dif-
        ferent revisions of the same product.

        All vendors up-rev but only a few support down-rev.

        Most CAD systems have a proprietary library format so
        you won't see anything transportable to another type of
        system.
