Because you posted your question to more than one forum, I'm repeating the response here This issue has been of concern to many folks in the industry for several reasons. When the project was proposed last fall, over 200 people from all parts of the PCB manufacturing and assembly industry expressed interest. Some wanted a common method to be able to compute Defects per Million Opportunities (DPMO) at the end of the assembly process as a means to benchmark companies against each other. The work in progress for this is IPC-7912 Calculation of DPMO in electronic Assembly Acceptance Inspection. Another group is concerned with tracking every process indicator as well as end item defects at every step of the assembly process. This data can be used for SPC/CPI. The work in progess for this is IPC-9261 Calculation of DPMO in Electronic Assembly Operations. The documents are in early draft stages and at the task group meeting several weeks ago they set some ambitious goals. The next scheduled meeting of this group will be with our fall committee meetings at IPC-SMTA Electronics Assembly EXPO in Providence RI October 24-29. The task group may choose to have an Interim Meeting later in the summer if significant progress is made on the documents, though. Your association's leaders for this project are Fritz Byle (Rockwell/Allen Bradley) and Tom Olafsson (Teradyne). Some think that all shorts and opens prior to touch- up should be reported as defects, others believe we should report only defects found after touch-up. Questions: 1.) How do other companies do this? 2.) Is there an industry standard method for reporting defects? 3.) Is there an IPC (or other organization's) standard or manual for reporting procedures?
