Scott, You should be able to fing information on Atotech on the PC Fab web site at www.pcfab.com/pcb.htm. The reducer in oxide changes the copper oxide from cupric to cuprous. The change in the oxidation state reduces the chance of pink ring by making the oxide less susceptilbe to attack by acids. I have not worked with Atotech's oxide before however the reducer for black will work as above and a reducer like Mac Dermids oxide will change the black oxide to brown by cutting back the black to producer a thinner oxide that is brown. The brown oxide has crystal structure that is not as long in length and each crystal structure has been further roughened to produce a superior surface for bonding. Further high Tg material such as polyimide is extremely hard. When pressed with Black oxide the long crystal structures fracture, weakening bond strength. Also standard black oxide ( no reducer) with its cupric oxide structure does not hold up well to high temperature pressing in the 425 'F range.
