We have been doing this for 3 years with no problems found in engineering or in the field. Both sockets and connectors are being mounted this way. All of these devices have gold plated leads which are being press-fit into the PCB. We do use a gold lubricant on the pins prior to press-fitting to reduce drag and pressure needed to insert the pins. If you need any other info, please contact me. If so, what kind of results are you getting? Is there any reason this should not be done?
