\0 TO: I4235700 IBMMAIL new address for ipc technet 25.6.96 FROM: DSTEWART EX2 D.Stewart - Product Development Manager. DATE: 17 January 1997 SUBJECT: DRILL SPINDLE RUNOUT Most modern drilling machines use lasers for checking tool diameter , broken drill detection and spindle runout. The spindle runout is checked dynamically, and typically will be run up the whole spectrum of rpm range. This also helps identify areas of resonance that should be avoided as speeds when drilling boards. The runout for the spindle should be checked using a 1/8" drill BLANK, the runout measured with different size tools is affected by the concentricity of the drill bit and may reflect more on poor tools than poor spindles. We run with a maximum of 4 tenths of a thou runout, cleaning collets, replacing collets or replacing spindles to bring the figure back down to below this level.
