Mail*Link(r) SMTP FWD>RE>Haloing and Pinkling Hiderori Pinkling -- I believe the term you make reference to is "Pink Ring", which is in the IPC-T-50, it is the leaching of the brown/red/black oxide surface adhesion promoter the printed board manufacturer places on the surfaces of the inner layers prior to lamination. (The "pink ring" refers to the natural pink salmon like color of copper.) After drilling the holes, various acids/chemicals preferentially attack the oxide treatment around the holes during the surface conditioning prior to the electroless metalizations. The result is a subsurface "pink" colored ring around the plated-through hole on the surfaces of the internal. There has not been any reported failures due to "pink ring" even though there is a local separation (void) of the desired material at the interface between the inner layer and base material (prepreg) resin. COMMENT - The new IPC-A-600 "E" page 19 has a "photo" of what looks like a "gross case" of pink ring, even though it is not "pink" in color. The condition shown on page 19, I believe has progressed beyond "pink ring" and is almost a delamination void. Haloing -- your second term, this term is likewise covered in both the IPC-T-50 and the IPC-A-600 "E", page 22. Haloing is mechanically induced fracturing or delaminating on or below the surface of the base material: it is usually exhibited by a light area around the holes, other machined areas or both. COMMENT - in addition to the definition, haloing is a local separation of the resin from the glass fibers, which changes the reflectance of the light in the base material and gives it haloing the normal whitish-like color appearance.
