Barry:

We have tried both ways you have described. Some companies
reflow their SMT components and still run across the wave
solder machine to solder the PTH components. Many are
trying intrusive soldering/Pin-in-hole and reflow both SMT
     and through hole.

Covering the SMT with a fixture while soldering the through
hole is called selective soldering. To successfully
selective solder certain design guidelines must be followed.
If you decide to try selective soldering I would recommend
contacting Eric Miller at S.P. Precision International,
Ltd., in Forest Grove, OR., 97116, Tel (800) 725-5388. They
have assisted us in the past. They also manufacture
selective soldering fixtures as well as other types. Hope
this helps. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!!
