I agree with James, these PWBs not only display a serious etching process problem, but also a very serious process control/inspection problem at the fabricator; they should never have left the shop. -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of James Sent: Wednesday, July 15, 2015 10:03 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [TN] MYSTRY DEFECT It is clearly rejectable and the vias are full of nodules and bad plating. They will probably open during assembly. Contamination on the surface in this magnitude is definitely indicative of a process problem and the chance of the contamination being in the holes is high James Hofer General Manager Accurate Circuit Engineering (ACE) 3019 S. Light makes all defects of this type LOOK huge. IF the plating where the defects are is thinner than your specification for surface plating thickness, then it's rejectable. Measuring is easiest with a high resolution (>200X) optical microscope with a calibrated focus height readout. If used by a skilled operator, you can get a resolution of 3 microns or even a little better. If that's not good enough, you need to section and probably use SEM. I definitely would be kicking these back to the vendor!
