Here is the Element Quiz Answer The Question: This element is widely distributed in the Earth's crust but never found in its natural elemental state. This element is often found in copper, zinc and arsenic ores. This element is also recovered from coal burning flue deposits. This element is responsible for the extinction of the vacuum tube. Which element is being described? The Answer: The element is Germanium (Ge). The Bell lab team of Shockley, Brattain and Bardeen discovered that a crystal of Ge could act as a semiconductor which meant it could be an amplifier thus replacing glass vacuum tubes in radios. Clemens Winkler was analyzing silver ore (Ag8GeS6) and he keep coming up 7% short on the assessment. In 1886 he identified the missing 7% as a new element that he named "germanium" after his native country Germany. Germanium is widely used in today's electronics as a semiconductor material. The winner of the weekly element quiz is Steve Gregory and he will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios for the week. TechNet was getting wonky last week so I don't know how many folks actually got the Quiz but some folks did based on the responses I received. So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following: Past Quiz winners/tasks: Week 1 Dick Krug, Spartan Complex Systems Week 2 Laura Turbini, IRC Week 3 James Head, Crowcon Detection Instruments Limited Week 3 Pat Goodyear, PGE Week 4 Joe Russeau, Precision Analysts Laboratory Week 5 Tom Carroll, Boeing Defense, Space and Security Week 6 Steve Gregory Week 7 Phil Kinner Week 8 Brian Ellis Week 9 James Head,Crowcon Detection Instruments Limited Week 10 Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc. If they do good I might take them after some big Musky on the New river. I hope Muskies don't like to eat Gnomes! Week 83 James Head, Crowcon Detection Instruments Limited - After a very hectic week the boys are on their way back. They've been helping to sort out component obsolescence issues, and also a bit of wild animal training when taking our cat, Crapouiette, to the vet this morning for a check-up. The vet describes her as a "naughty tourtie" - a tortoiseshell. I do hope the scratches heal quickly (sorry boys). Week 84 Mike Fenner - Fantastic timing. I am just starting reconstructing our garden in the old cottage we just moved to. So lots of earth moving, stone walls, new fencing raised flower beds and so on. In the evenings The Elephant and Castle Pub is 2 minutes away. The Elephant serves Hook Norton brewed just up the road in a Victorian gravity brewery (still uses the original steam engine). We can investigate all the different brews and guest lagers. We may or may not be reporting on this. Week 85 Steve Gregory - assisted with ???? Everyone have a safe week.
