Hi folks - Here is the Element Quiz Question Answer: The Question: This element has been used for thousands of years. It has two oxide states. Its chloride compound is used as red pigment in glass and ceramics. It is used in plant fungicide to prevent smut. Octopus blood. What element is being described? The Answer: The element is Copper (Cu)! Copper has been known to humans for thousands of years and has played a key role in industrial applications. A number of sea creatures and insects utilize copper for enabling the transport of oxygen in their blood instead of iron utilized in the human circulatory system. The winner of the weekly element quiz is Brian Ellis and he will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios for the week. Brian barely nudged out Greg Munie and Joyce Koo on the Firewall timestamp for registering the correct response. Clumpy and Kloumpios hopped on a cargo flight and are in route to Brian's house today. Kloumpios and Clumpy were hard working gnomes last week at APEX and apparently hard playing too. Kloumpios ended up in the emergency room for leg injuries (I'll have Steve post the pictures). Brian will have to give Kloumpios some desk work on this visit. EQQAB did review Doug's submission of Bondium and unfortunately his answer was disallowed. Consultation with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography SDSU in San Diego CA revealed that octopus blood contains the copper rich protein hemocyanin and not bondium as he stated. The Scripps experts have no evidence to supporting that octopus blood contains bondium. So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following: Past Quiz winners/tasks: Week 1 Dick Krug, Spartan Complex Systems Week 2 Laura Turbini, IRC Week 3 James Head, Crowcon Detection Instruments Limited Week 3 Pat Goodyear, PGE Week 4 Joe Russeau, Precision Analysts Laboratory Week 5 Tom Carroll, Boeing Defense, Space and Security Week 6 Steve Gregory Week 7 Phil Kinner Week 8 Brian Ellis Week 9 James Head, Crowcon Detection Instruments Limited Week 10 Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc. Week 45 Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc. - Rumor has it Leland's facility had an ice storm so the boys put their salt spreader attachments on their tractors and should be at his place today to assist. Week 46 Joe Russeau, Precision Analysts Laboratory - assisted with ???? Week 47 Phil Bavaro, L-3 Communications - Grumpy seems to be able to hold his alcohol very well, but I cannot say the same for Clumpy (or is it the other way around?). Personally I think it had to do with one of them enjoying a good traditional meal (photo on its way thru Steve) before drinking. Then again maybe it was just the Irish whiskey that got to him. Either way they both seemed to like San Diego a little too much so I am going to make them help me research NWOs this week before we all leave for APEX. Week 48 Brian Ellis - assisted with ???? Everyone have a safe week.
