Good afternoon all, As far as the 3M 600 series tape is concerned, be aware that there are two, count them two, 3M 600 tapes. The one that comes from 3Ms Stationary Division, usually used for wrapping Christmas presents, has a relatively low adhesive strength. The 3M 600 tape that comes from their Industrial supplies division is much stronger. So if you want the coating test to pass you use the Stationary tape. If you want the coating to fail, you use the Industrial tape. IPC TM-650 2.4.1.6 is a similar cross cut adhesion test method. The ASTM called out the use of P-99 tape that was discontinued approximately 5 years ago. The ASTM committee last reported in 2010 that they were still evaluating replacement tapes. The IPC TM-650, created in 1995, calls out 3M #600 as a suitable tape. I was curious if most are using the #600 or a different tape (please specify). The tape choice question surfaced during a discussion with a customer that originally specified a different tape. I thought I'd ask others in the industry to better understand what tape the majority of the industry was using.
