Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz answer: The Question: This element will ignite at 150C and reacts violently with water. This element is easy to magnetize but extremely difficult to demagnetize. Its used in cigarette lighter flints. What element is being described? The Answer: The element is Samarium (Sm)! Samarium is an excellent reducing agent as it releases hydrogen when immersed in water and has the capacity to absorb neutrons from nuclear reactors. Samarium is named after samarskite ore and was not discovered until 1879 by Paul Emile Locoq de Boisbaudran using difficult chemical fractionation processes to isolate it. Hints of samarium's existence were proposed in 1853 by Jean Charles Gallisard de Marignac using spectrometry techniques. The winner of the weekly element quiz will is Don Vischulis and he will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios for the week. Don - let me know where your facility is located and I'll get the boys going that direction asap. The seven members of the FEQAB investigated Doug's submission of "catnium" and disqualified his submission for 3 reasons: (1) a number of animals such as small dogs, hamsters and pigeons go "poof" on a tin roof at 150C so that observation was not considered a defining characteristic unique to catnium; (2) Dave Hillman has never had to degauss a cat from Joan's refrigerator. He has been quoted to say "I love cats, I just can't eat a whole one" which has gotten him in serious issues with Joan; (3) Discussions with a number of Ion Chromatography experts (who shall remain nameless) provided this information " Technically Doug is analyzing for an ion using IC and not the element so that detail may be grounds for disqualification. More importantly, numerous IC experts maintain that catnium co-elutes with ammonium since they have very similar chemical properties and that separating the two requires additional techniques beyond IC. Ludwig von Thermopolis Fischer wrote a paper entitled, "No CAT-P here", where he tried doing as Doug suggested. He could not distinguish between ammonium and catnium, which is why most chromatographers don't even list catnium as a valid ion. You might say that in the chromatography world ammonium has more stank on it.". Sorry Doug, your submission has been ruled not accepted by FEQAB. So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following: Past Quiz winners/tasks: Week 1 Dick Krug, Spartan Complex Systems Week 2 Laura Turbini, IRC Week 3 James Head, Crowcon Detection Instruments Limited Week 3 Pat Goodyear, PGE Week 4 Joe Russeau, Precision Analysts Laboratory Week 5 Tom Carroll, Boeing Defense, Space and Security Week 6 Steve Gregory Week 7 Phil Kinner Week 8 Brian Ellis Week 9 James Head, Crowcon Detection Instruments Limited Week 10 Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc. Week 31 Heidi Havelka, Interplex Sunbelt - Our tool and die making team could use some help setting up presses and maintaining tools, so Clumpy and Kloumpios will get a crash course in precision metal stamping this week! I hope they brought sunglasses and swimsuits, because it's still beach weather here in sunny South Florida, and they should have plenty of time to work on their tan. Week 32 Raye Rivera, Canoga Perkins - We are just launching some new products so the boys can help out with product testing for NEBS qualifications. They also apparently had fun in Malibu. Week 33 Steve Creswick - assisted with ???? Week 34 Dewey Whittaker, Honeywell - the "Boys" and I went to Las Vegas to polish up on their comedy act. I told them that "what happens in Las Vegas, Stays in Las Vegas". I think they took me literally. I got a note from a Dancer that they left contact information in the secret safe where Doug keeps the key to his Mountain Dew stash. Their previous time spent with Graham paid off as they also took my American Express card. I hope they get back safe. Week 35 Don Vischulis - assisted with ???? Everyone have a safe week!
