That and each station had multiple backups plus there one a cross link at each station to transmit data forward to the next station and receive from the previous station. Or that at least is what I remember. In ET school in 1972 we had computer that amounted to several transistor and/or/nand/nor gates and J/K flip flops, and counter registers.
