Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer: The Question: This element is never encountered outside of nuclear facilities or research laboratories. The discovery of this element was kept secret until 1955. The code name "Mike". What element is being described? The Answer: The element is Fermium (Fm)! Fermium was discovered after analyzing the fallout material from the first thermonuclear explosion in the Pacific on November 1 1952. The discovery of Fm in 1952 was finally announced in 1955 because a group of physicists at the Nobel Institute in Stockholm had independently made a few atoms of Fm in 1953/1954 by bombarding uranium-238 with oxygen-16 nuclei. Fermium is the highest atomic number that can be produced in a nuclear reactor. Researchers have been frustrated in their attempts to study Fm because fermium-257 is very good at capturing neutrons and will absorb a neutron forming fermium-258 which has a half life of 0.37 milliseconds! The winners of the weekly element quiz is Larry Dzaugis and Bob Kondner, Index Designs. I technically messed up this week as the clues I provided also apply to Einsteinium so Bob was also correct. They will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios for the week. Larry - let me know where you are located and I'll have the boys spend part of the week with you and then they'll head to Bob's for the remainder of the week.
