Could it be that only enough SAC wicks across the pad to saturate with gold?  So that bow wave is fully AuSn4, which has a high melting point so it freezes up.  It wouldn't matter how much gold thickness in this case, since the Sn doesn't distribute evenly across.   Maybe there are some Cu or O dopants that add color.
