The problem is that everyone wants to see it just from their vantage point. It is much work to see it from anyone else's viewpoint, let alone attempt to see a multitude of viewers. It certainly helps to have to sit in someone else's seat for a bit. Another part of the problem is "push and take". On a recent project I was told to use two SMT connectors (that would receive edge fingers, so they were rather tall). I took one look at the spacing between them and said nope--not for our hand-assembled boards. A soldering tech was then asked if he could solder it. Yes he said. I put my foot down and went through-hole anyhow. Later on the tech thanked me that he wouldn't be seeing those two closed-spaced SMT connectors. Thing is, he could have soldered it, with much work, push come to shove. After all, on his end, by the time he gets a board it's too late to change the design--so he might as well claim to be able to solder anything.
