Shawn, The tech would have been better to clarify his response by, "Yes, I can solder it if I absolutely have to, but others, with less skill, will have difficulty and result in added rework. From a Manufacturability standpoint, this is not desired." This would have preserved his apparent skills, but would have also provided valuable manufacturing insight. The tech needs to know that he has a ally in the design department to whom he can bring suggestions. It is similar to, "I can do anything once, but that does not necessarily make it 'manufacturable' " Steve C -----Original Message----- From: TechNet [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Upton, Shawn Sent: Wednesday, December 21, 2011 8:37 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [TN] QFP center slug over signal vias The problem is that everyone wants to see it just from their vantage point. It is much work to see it from anyone else's viewpoint, let alone attempt to see a multitude of viewers. It certainly helps to have to sit in someone else's seat for a bit. Another part of the problem is "push and take". On a recent project I was told to use two SMT connectors (that would receive edge fingers, so they were rather tall). I took one look at the spacing between them and said nope--not for our hand-assembled boards. A soldering tech was then asked if he could solder it. Yes he said. I put my foot down and went through-hole anyhow. Later on the tech thanked me that he wouldn't be seeing those two closed-spaced SMT connectors. Thing is, he could have soldered it, with much work, push come to shove. After all, on his end, by the time he gets a board it's too late to change the design--so he might as well claim to be able to solder anything.
