Thank Heavens Bev. For a minute, I thought Dave had now started lumping you in with me and disqualifying you without cause no matter how brilliant the answer. That is why I never win the quiz....... A successful appeal! The boys will spend their day or two with me looking at increasing our capabilities in testing for more, different phthalates. This element has 31 isotopes but none have a half life of more than a few hours. When this element is cooled below its freezing point, it phosphoresces brightly. What element is being described? Bonus question: Name the country where this element was initially discovered, and name the university/country who is given credit for the discovery of the element. The Answer: The element is Radon (Rn)! The discovery of Radon was not a "clean" exercise. Radon was called niton, Latin for "shining" by William Ramsay and Robert Whytlaw-Graw who studied it in 1908 in University College, London. The first "discoverer" was Friedrich Ernst Dorn at Halle, Germany in 1900 while he investigated radium compounds. In 1902, Ernst Rutherford and Frederick Soddy at McGill University in Canada studied the gas showing it could be condensed into a liquid. In 1923 the International Committee of Chemical Elements proposed the name radon. The greatest risk of radon is not itself but the isotopes it transmutes into such as lead-210 which has a half life of 22 years. The winner of the weekly element quiz is a bit of a convoluted mess. The Friday Element Quiz Rule Arbitration Committee (FEQRAC) has reviewed the data, the requests for appeals, the time stamps on the submitted results, Doug's current consumption of Diet Mountain Dew and determined the follow "group" is declared the winner of this week's quiz: Bev Christian, RIM, Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc., Patrick Goodyear, PGE and Richard Stadem,GD-AIS. Clumpy and Kloumpios are going to hit all 4 facilities - I heard the John Deere's fire up and tear out of here earlier. Their GPS planning grid shows a plan of hitting Richard first, Bev second, hopping a train to Leland's third and a cargo flight to Pat's last. Good thing they had last week off.
