If dispensing the acrylic conformal coating generates charge, being an insulator, the only ESD control that we have is neutralization using an ionizer. It is desirable that all tools be dissipative, so can be grounded. Using a dissipative syringe would allow charges on the syringe to be removed to ground. That is, if grounded. Can you measure the charge on the acrylic conformal coating? This is what is applicable from ANSI/ESD S20.20 section 8.3: "In order to mitigate field-induced CDM [Charged Device Model] damage, the ESD program shall include a plan for the handling of process-required insulators. If the field exceeds 2,000 volts/inch, steps shall be taken to either: A) Separate the insulator from the ESD-sensitive device by a distance of 30 cm (12 inches); or B) Use ionization or other charge mitigating techniques to neutralize the charge. NOTE: The accurate measurement of electrostatic fields requires that the person making the measurement is familiar with the operation of the measuring equipment. Most hand held meters require that the reading be taken at a fixed distance from the object. They also normally specify that the object has a minimum dimension of fixed size in order to get an accurate reading." The question has been raised internally as to the risk of ESD generation when an acrylic conformal coating (an insulative material) is applied using pneumatic syringes (also an insulative material), through a nylon brush (a third synthetic material). 1. Do you know of any studies done benchmarking static generation levels? We have done some here, but want to do a sanity check. 2. If you have such devices in your facilities, what are your mitigation efforts? Air ionizers, grounded tubes? 3. Does anyone use, and can recommend, ESD safe syringe bodies and caps? Many thanks in advance. Doug Pauls Rockwell Collins ______________________________________________________________________ This email has been scanned by the MessageLabs Email Security System.
