Dave, You can tell Clumpy/Kloumpios to set the GPS units on their tractors to Herborn, Germany. They can help inspect galleys for commercial airplanes. Everytime you fly a Boeing airplane take a close look at the galleys. I'm sure Clumpy/Kloumpios will leave their stamp of approval somewhere on the galleys they help produce. Nearly 10% of this element's production is used as an alloying addition for a periodic table Group 5 metal. It is a superconductor below 5.1K. As a pure metal, this element has no structural applications. What element is being described? The Answer: The element is Vanadium (V)! Vanadium is a critical beta phase stabilizer in titanium alloys and plays a major role as an alloying element in tool & high strength, low alloy (HSLA) steels. There is 650 tons of vanadium in the HSLA steel of the Trans-Alaska pipeline which permits the high pumping pressures to move crude oil more effectively. Since 1977, over 13 billion gallons of crude oil has flowed thru the HSLA steel pipeline. Vanadium based alloys are also used as superconductors in some specialized applications instead of the more traditional Niobium based alloys. The quiz winner is Tom Carroll of Boeing Defense, Space and Security. Tom is somewhere in Europe and will need to give Clumpy/Kloumpios an address to put into their GPS units on their tractors. Sounds like another boat ride for the dynamic duo. So far they have: Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings - accomplished nothing (drank lots of coffee) Week 2 Bev Christian, RIM - conducted REACH material testing Week 3 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc. - Solderability testing and mowed the lawn Week 4 Ian Fox, Goodrich - had an epic journey of travel Week 4 Gary Ferrari, Garrick Global - unknown Week 5 Fredrick Miller, Astrolab - unknown Week 6 David Nelson, Raytheon - Was a tackling dummy for Dallas Cowboys Week 7 Graham Collins, L3 Communications - Cleaned gutters and painted window trim Week 8 Bill Noel, ITT Geospatial Systems Division - unknown Week 9 Steve Gregory of RD Circuits - unknown Week 10 David Bealer of Watchfire Signs - descaled the in-line wash machine! Ouch! Week 11 Dick Krug of Sparton Corporation - assisted with AS9100 quality management systems requirements audit Week 12 Steve Creswick of Balanced Enterprise Solutions - Acted as Steve's "go fer" due to a broken leg! Week 13 Gebhard Neifer, Delphi - conducted a plasma pre treatment Taguchi DOE for a sealing process Week 14 Bev Christian, RIM - assisted with a tin pest investigation/test Week 15 Bev Christian, RIM - assisted Bev shoveling snow Week 16 David Bealer of Waatchfire Signs - assisted with reflow profiling Week 17 Brian Ellis, rumored to be retired - assisted with rewiring the house, had a tractor accident and found his cousin Kloumpios Week 18 Denny Fritz, SAIC - assisted with tin whisker inspection/examinations Week 19 Graham Collins, L3 Communications - assisted with scraping barnacles, boat paint and boat engine maintenance Week 20 Mark Woolley, PTRL Laboratory Avaya - assisted with ????????? Week 20 Tom Carroll, Boeing Defense, Space and Security - assisted with ????????? Everyone have a great weekend.
