When we switch many (but not all) of our boards to RoHS, we specified red mask to make it very obvious to manufacturing, field service, and repair depot that it was a lead free only board, as opposed to the good old green. Any development or pre production boards are known company wide to be any color except red or green. Clear is preferred, to see the traces up to the nearest plane layer. So now we've closed our captive plant, the offshore CM wants all green, all the time, because red might add a few pennies to the board cost.
